No Prison Oversight
Virginia Dept of Corrections employs more then 12,000 people and has a budget of over 1.3 billion dollars a year. There is zero independent oversight. Independent oversight is essential for a safe and healthy prison system to ensure the safe and humane treatment of the men and women who are incarcerated.

Overuse of Solitary Confinement
“Solitary confinement” means isolation of a prisoner from the general population through confinement to a cell or other place for 22 or more hours within a 24-hour period. 50% of prison suicides occur in people who are housed in solitary confinement. Just 15 days in solitary can cause permanent psychological damage.
